sustainability & longterm benefits
The development of the Millennium Mills site with the right plan to connect and generally involve the local community will create a thriving area enhanced after years of abandonment. Providing new jobs, homes, and space for start-up businesses.
Brownfield redevelopment has many proven long-term benefits, it is considered a sustainable land use strategy that helps address urban sprawl and promotes economic development, bolstering the public tax base through new job creation.
The regeneration of the Millenium Mills site can address health, ecological and economic threats from the land and leads to the more sustainable use of valuable land resources especially with its prominent location in London and close to London City Airport.
Risks to the success of this regeneration plan are unpredictable, however in terms of not achieving the vision created by building with and for the local people, it is vital that every decision is made by consulting with the community and ensuring that they are involved with every step.
To make sure the local people engage with the plan and the development of the site, implementation of the building will begin with the landscaping of the green space surrounding the Silo D and attached community centre. This will encourage a feeling of ownership for the area and allow them to embrace the change.
